I liked the more subtle contrast to give the image a softer appeal to compliment his kind, quiet eye.
I agree; lower contrast always makes an image softer and if that is what you are going for it was a good decision.
It's such a good use of the light, giving the photo real contrast.
I think the fact its a white horse gives the photo more impact

Jag is chestnut (reddish-brown) though! Only gray-scaled the image so his highlights were white.
